Gay Marriage

The fact that gay marriage is still not legal in all 50 states is appalling. Straight people have no more of a right to get married then gay people do, and the idea that the government is preventing some people from marrying people they love is disgraceful. The lack of the legality of Gay marriage needs to be changed immediately. To say that two people who love each other can't legally decide to spend their lives together goes against American values. Due to the fact that our country has such a long history of prejudice and discrimination, one would think that this wouldn't even be an issue. For years, many different types of people have had to face myriad prejudice and discrimination. There have been constitutional amendments to prevent further prejudice of people because of their race, religion, ethnicity, and gender. Why then, are people still discriminated against because of their sexuality? Gays, lesbians, and transgender people aren't any different from straight men and women who are lucky enough to have their lifelong unions acknowledged by the government. They are all simply two people who love each other so much, and want to spend the rest of their lives together. It just goes back to everything black people had to face during the formation and early years in this country. The only thing different about them was their skin color; yet somehow this prevented them from living the type of lives that they wanted to lead. Thankfully, our country has finally recognized the fact that skin color does not mean anything; it does not make anyone smarter or dumber; less important or more important than anyone else. This philosophy needs to be applied to gay people, too. Gay people and straight people are the same; they fall in love and want to get married. The only difference is one group of people is prohibited from legally pledging their lifelong love for each other.
When people argue against gay marriage, they often use the argument that they are not homophobic, they just think that a marriage is between a man and a woman. How is this not homophobic? A marriage is between two people who love each other; gender doesn't need to have anything to do with it.
Gay marriage needs to be legalized, and quickly. The prejudice and discrimination against gay people has gone on for far too long. They are American citizens who deserve to have the same rights as every other person.

  1. It is definitely appalling that homosexuals are not able to legally marry. Heterosexual people abuse the right to marry; many get marry for love, yet some get married for money, politics, unwanted pregnancy, etc. These heterosexual couples still get the benefits, however. Homosexual couples who spend their lives together are not always able to get benefits, have hospital visitation rights, etc. This is simply unfair and disgusting. We are supposed to be in the land of the free where all men are created equal, not in the land of the free where all men are created equal except gays. I agree with you 100%. It is time for change in America when it comes to the issue of gay marriage; it is time for equality and for gay marriage to be legalized.

  2. I agree that laws agains same sex marriage are ridiculous. No one should be able to define the kind of love that is allowed to be married. Traditional marriage between just a man and a woman has been around for so long and it will be a difficult thing to change, but I believe we are headed in the right direction. Once an idea, the belief that being gay is wrong, has been implanted in most of people's minds, it is very, very hard to overcome. Gay marriage will be legalized soon enough, but people's personal beliefs about the issue will be slower to come

  3. I agree that it is wrong that there are people who love each other who can't marry one another. It seems like the "pursuit of happiness" that the Constitution entails would include that sort of thing. I definitely feel like homosexuality is just another thing that some people have to get past much like race. Hopefully it's only a matter of time.
